2 weeks ago, i had the pleasure of conducting a short, ten minute interview with the beatiful Stacy Epps. she was here in budapest performing at Cadik's (one of the best hungarian djs, who's been also producing, being a part of membran) debut album's release party. now you have the pleasure of reading the interview.

JG: Hi, how you doing?

Stacy Epps: Great, thanks.

J: Could you just introduce yourself briefly?

S: Hi, I’m Stacy Epps, MC, singer, lover of music, sound healer, sound gipsy…

J: Sound gipsy?

S: Yeah (laughing)

J: Sounds nice and interesting, that’s something, not a lot of people would say in this country. But it makes sense. Mentioning gipsies, you have quite an interesting ethnical background and your childhood was a bit unusual.

S: I’m mixed black and Japanese. My grandmother’s from Japan, and I come from a family with generations in the military, my father was in the military as well as his father and my Mom’s father and his father. So I moved around a lot when I was growing up, in every one or two years, so I lived all over the place, I got to know a lot of music as I was travelling, sharing music with people, so it was beautiful.

J: What was it like growing up like that? Moving around constantly?

S: Actually I was living in Germany, and also in the States, in many states, like Virginia, Texas, California, North Carolina, New York, Georgia and so on.

J: Wasn’t it difficult growing up like that? Was it frustrating, like knowing you shouldn’t settle down, making friends and then you might never see them again, always in a new school, in a new environment. Or was it inspiring, getting to know new places and people, experiencing different ways of life, even though the military background was always the same?

S: I would say both, it was inspiring seeing a lot of places, it gave me a lot of skills as far as get to know people, fitting in new areas, being always the new girl all the time (laughing)

J: But I guess you were never bullied in school…

S: Oh, I was (laughing), but it was also difficult, too, you always knew, that you are going to leave, like deep down, it gave you the feeling, that “oh, sometimes I’m going to leave” and that feeling just stuck, like even now, after a couple of years I always get that feeling, “Ok, it’s time to go…”, so that’s why for me, home is very important, building a home, having a home is very important. Regardless of all the travelling and moving, it is important to have a home.

J: And have you found that home?

S: Well, not yet (laughing)

J: I guess then as you were growing up, you were exposed to a lot of different music, what inspired you to get into music, what were your earliest experiences, like did your parents listen to a lot of music?

S: Well, my parents did listen to music, but weren’t into it like that. Actually I was a late boomer in music, like I always loved music, I always sang, but I actually started performing, - I rapped first, I was rhyming - like late high school. And then, I started singing as well, and then from there it was just the feeling, like discovering a hidden treasure, which you didn’t know you have, and I was immediately attached to it, you know.

J: And at some point you moved to Atlanta, Georgia as far as I know, your carrier basically started there, right?

S: Yeah, I lived there as an early teenager and then my parents moved there and been living there on and off, but it’s not my home.

J: You also went to university there and you started working with Science of Life and Sol Uprising evolved from there, right?

S: Yes, at that time I started working with Scienz of Life, that’s the first group I worked with and we had a good vibe together, we had very good chemistry and it was really easy to make music. And I loved the music ID 4 Windz made; it was real easy to write to it. So me and Lil` Sci, we were like, “Yo, let’s make a group” and that’s how Sol Uprising happened. And it was a beautiful record and actually my first real work, my first record so it was very exciting, and a learning process.

J: Ok, I have to ask this one, cause as far as I know, you also had something to do with Hemisphere, another let’s say, underground group from Atlanta.

S: Yeah, wow, nobody ever asked me about them! Tariq L, actually one of the first producers I ever worked with. Wow! (Laughing)

J: Their only record is such a great record, I truly think it’s one of the most underrated records, but then they just disappeared…

S: Yeah, Tariq L and U-George, the MC, they were amazing, man, but they broke up as a group. But it’s, ah… it’s such a great record. But I got good news: they are both doing solo work. Like Tariq L also rhymes now besides producing and actually U-George should have something coming out on Shaman Works soon…

J: Ok, let’s get back to you, I guess most people know you from the MF Doom and Madlib`s project, ‘Madvillain’, from the song ‘Eye’…

S: Actually I knew MF Doom and he had the Madlib beats as he was working on it, and I heard one of the beats and I was “wow, this beat is really dope”, and he was like “well, then do some to it”, I was like, “Word?...” And it came really easy, I did what I did, he showed it to Madlib, who liked it and it ended up

on the record. It was really cool.

J: Actually the first time I saw you and I guess most Hungarians heard about you and definitely most Europeans got to know you was two years ago, on the “Sistas of Rhyme” tour with Bahamadia and Invincible. What was that tour like? Was that your first time in Europe as a musician and through that what do you think about Europe and the States as far as hip-hop?

S: Yeah, the Sistas of rhyme tour, it was just great, we rocked all over Europe. Actually it happened through Invincible, who I truly love, we’ve know each other for a long time and we were always very supportive with each other. Like helping each other wherever we can, making shows together, sometimes just freestyling to each other on the phone (laughing). We are in The Anomalies together, which is basically an all girl crew, all girls, MCs, DJs, producers, b-girls. And it happened through her. As far as the difference between Europe and the States? It’s a lot more relaxed here. People appreciate the music a lot more here, it’s just good vibe and it’s all about the music. In the states, it’s all about the grind. You know everybody grinding, trying to get ahead, focusing on the hustle, a lot of times I get the feeling that the music itself is secondary, which I think you can see if you look at the most of the stuff, which is out right now.

J: Your first solo project was the ‘Ruff Draft’ CD.

S: Well it wasn’t a real project, I put that together before the Sistas in Rhyme tour, just so I can have something, I can put something into the hands of the fans, so it was made for Europe, but then people were asking for it and actually I’m quite proud of it, cause you know it was never promoted, still people demanded it.

J: This year saw the release of your first proper solo album, “The Awakening”.

S: Yeah, I’m really happy about it. You know I was known for collaborations, I was a guest on a lot of project and I felt it’s time to have my own stuff. I worked with a lot of great producers, like Apex, Bilal Salaam, Muhsinah, Flying Lotus, and Nick Speed. The first single was `Floating` which was doing very well, I had a lot of positive feedback on it. It was very good fun making the record I really enjoyed it, and I’m very happy that finally I have my own and happy with the record.

J: I want to ask you about Flying Lotus, I really dig his music, he, let’s say broke last year and his music is very interesting. Very glitchy, electronic-hop, or whatever you want to call it, but he makes instrumental music. I know he did some remixes and have a track here and there, but I was surprised to see his name among the credits on your album.

S: Well me and Flying Lotus go way back, I’ve known him for a long time. I really like the music he makes, so it made sense to collaborate and do something together.

J: Also I have noticed that although your music and lyrics were always soulful and conscious, and of course there are examples for that on your album, like the song `Addicted`, `Who knows` and `Heaven` which is about the struggles of a single mum. But at the same time – especially with the Flying Lotus track, `Cosmic Dust` you have taken a new direction, what’s next space?

S: (laughs) Yeah you know get high as you can, everybody is reaching for the stars. I mean I wouldn’t call it a new direction, but that’s what’s in me right now. That’s what I felt, so that’s what I made.

J: Finally it’s quite an obvious question, as the election just happened. What’s your take on Obama being elected as the next President of the United States?

S: Of course I’m very happy and I believe that this is a historical moment. I mean, first black president of the USA. This is great! There were a lot of talk about change during his campaign and I really hope that the change will come. I mean in the last years, well, you know, I guess the last few years weren’t really good for the country. And I’m happy that - after a long time – actually, what the people, the masses wanted has happened. But at the same time, as change is in the focus, people have to understand that his election alone won’t change things. They shouldn’t get caught up in the hype. People have to understand that change is only happening if they are willing to change. Every change starts in the individual, first people have to do some soul searching of their own. So in order to make all that change happen, people first need to change themselves. Change has to come from within.

J: Wise words…

S: Oh, thank you.

JG: Hello, kérhetnék egy rövid bemutatkozást?

Stacy Epps: Hello, Stacy Epps, MC, énekes, zene imádó, zenegyógyász, zenecigány...

J: Zenecigány?

S: Aha (nevet)

J: Valójában érdekesen és szépen hangzik, de azért ez nem olyasmi, amit sokan mondanának ebben az országban. De végülis teljesen helyénvaló. Ha már cigányok, elég érdekes etnikai- és életháttered van.

S: Fekete és japán keverék vagyok. A nagymamám japán volt és tradicionális katona családból származom. Az apám a hadseregben szolgált, ahogy az ő apja is, és az anyám apja ás nagyapja is. Szóval elég sokat költözünk gyerekkoromban, szinte minden évben, minden második évben, úgyhogy nagyon sok féle helyen éltem. Nagyon sok különböző zenét ismertem meg utazásaim során, sok zenét osztottam meg másokkal, ami nagyon jó volt.

J: Milyen volt így felnőni? Állandóan költözni?

S: Mint mondtam sok helyen éltem, Németországban, Amerikában nagyon sok államban, Virginiában, Texasban, Kaliforniában, Észak-Karolinában, New Yorkban, Georgia-ban, stb.

J: Nem volt nehéz így a gyerekor? Nem volt frusztráló, úgyértem sose állapodhatsz meg, szerezhetsz igazán közeli barátokat, tudván, hogy lehet, hogy sose találkoztok újra; mindig új iskola, új környezet. Vagy inkább inspiráló volt, sok helyet és embert ismerhettél meg, és bár a katonai háttér adott volt, azért új környezet és különböző életvitelek, életkörülmények.

S: Azt mondanám mindkettő igaz. Inspiráló volt a sok új hely, megtanultam hogyan ismerkedhetek meg új emberekkel, hogyan illeszkedjek be új helyeken, mindig te vagy az új lány az iskolában... (nevet)

J: Azért feltételezem nem sokat szivattak a suliban.

S: Oh, dehogynem (nevet), de ugyanakkor persze nehéz is volt, tudtad, hogy egyszercsak tovább állsz, mélyen mindig ott volt benned az érzés, hogy „oké, egyszercsak ezt is itthagyom” és ez az érzés örökre velem maradt, még mostanában is, néhány évenként érzem, hogy „ok, itt az ideje, hogy tovább állj”, de éppen ezért számomra az otthon nagyon fontos, a saját otthon felépítése. A sok utazás és költözés ellenére nagyon fontos, hogy legyen egy otthonom.

J: És megtaláltad már ezt az otthont?

S: Nos, még nem (nevet).

J: Gondolom, illetve te is említetted, hogy nagyon sok különböző zenét hallottál gyermekként. Mi inspirált, hogy zenével foglalkozzál, mik voltak az első élmények, például a szüleid sokat hallgattak zenét?

S: Nos a szüleim sok zenét hallgattak, de annyira azért nem voltak rákattanva. Valójában nyugodtam mondhatom, hogy amolyan későn érő tipus vagyok zenében, mindigis imádtam a zenét, mindig énekelgettem, de szerepelni – rappeléssel kezdtem – a középiskola vége felé kezdtem. Aztán elkezdtem énekelni is, és aztán már az érzés vitt előre, mint amikor egy rejtett kincset felfedezel, amiről nem is tudtad, hogy létezik és rögtön rákattantam.

J: Aztán – amennyire én tudom - valamikor Atlantába, Georgia-ba költözél, és a karriered ott kezdődött, igaz?

S: Igen, bár korai tinédzserként és aztán később a szüleim többször is éltek ott, Atlanta nem az otthonom.

J: De ha jól tudom odajártál egyetemre, és akkoriban keztél el a Scienz of Life-al dolgozni, amiből később a Sol Uprising is született.

S: Igen, akkoriban kezdtem el a Science of Life-al dolgozni, ők voltak az első csapat, akivel komolyabban munkálkodtam. Nagyon jól ment, nagyon jó volt a hangulat, könnyen megértettük egymást és nagyon simán ment együtt a zenélés. Ímádtam ID 4 Windz zenéjét, nagyon könnyen tudtam írni hozzá. Szóval Lil’ Sci és én úgy voltunk vele, „hé, csináljunk egy csapatot” és így született a Sol Uprising. És egy gyönyörű lemez készült, az első lemezem, úgyhogy nagyon izgalmas volt, és nagyon sokat tanultam belőle.

J: Ok, ezt meg kell kérdeznem, mert amennyire én tudom, van valami közöd a Hemisphere-hez is, egy másik atlantai, mondjuk úgy, underground hip-hop csapathoz.

S: Ja-ja, wow, sose kérdeztek még róluk! Tariq L, igazából az egyik első producer akivel valaha együtt dolgoztam, wow! (nevet)

J: Az egyetlen lemezük szerintem zseniális, komolyan gondolom, hogy egyike a legkevésbé értékelt lemezeknek. De aztán csak úgy eltüntek...

S: Igen Tariq L és U-George, ember..., tényleg hihetetlenek voltak, de mint duó feloszlottak. De, oh... valóban nagyon nagy az a lemez. De van egy jó hírem: mindketten folytatják, igaz egyedül. Tariq L a producerkedés mellett mostmár MC-zik is és ha minden igaz, U-George-nak nemsokára megjelenik valamilye a Shaman Works-ön keresztül.

J: Térjünk vissza hozzád, a legtöbb ember az MF Doom és Madlib lemezről, a „Madvillain”-ról ismer, vendégszerepeltél az „Eye” című számon.

S: Doom-ot már ismertem régebbről, és megmutatta a Madlib alapokat, amin éppen dolgozott, és ahogy meghallottam az egyiket, mondtam, neki, „uh, ez nagyon zsír”, ő meg: „hát akkor csinálj vele valamit”, én meg „esküdj?!”. És nagyon könnyen ment, megcsináltam, megmutatta Madlibnek, akinek tetszett és végül felkerült a lemezre. Nagyon örültem neki.

J: Én speciel először 2 éve láttalak, és gondolom a legtöbb magyar is akkor imsert meg, a „Sistas of Rhyme” turnén, Bahamadiával és Invincible-lel. Milyen volt a túrné? Ez volt az első alkalom, hogy Európában, mint zenész jártál, és ha már itt tartunk, mi a véleményed a különbségről az amerikai és az európai szcéna között?

S: Igen a Sistas in Rhyme túrné, nagyon király volt, végig zúztuk egész Európát. Invincible-ön keresztül jött össze a dolog, akit nagyon szeretek, nagyon régóta imserjük egymást és mindig is támogattuk egymást. Segítjük egymást ahol csak tudjuk, sokat lépünk fel együtt, néha meg csak freestyle-ozunk a telefonba (nevet). Mindketten tagjai vagyunk a The Anomaliesnek, ami egy csupa csaj csapat, csak csajok, MC-k, DJ-k, producerek, b-girl-ök. Európa és Amerika? Sokkal nyugisabb itt. Az emberek sokkal inkább értékelik a zenét, csak a jó hangulat, és tényleg a zenéről szól. Az Államokban minden csak a gründolásról szól. Tudod, mindenki nyomja a húsdarálóban, mindenki nyomja a seftelést, és sokszor érzem úgy, hogy maga a zene csak másodlagos, ami szerintem igen jól látszik is, ha csak megnézzük, milyen zenék mennek mostanában.

J: Az első szóló munkád a „Ruff Draft” EP volt.

S: Nos nem nevezném igazi projektnek, a Sistas in Rhyme turnéra dobtam össze, csak hogy legyen valami, amit a közönség kezébe nyomhatok, szóval eredetileg Európának készült, de aztán az emberek állandóan keresték. Amire nagyon büszke vagyok, mert vágod, nulla promóció, az emberek mégis hallani akarták.

J: Idén jelent meg az első igazi albumod, a „The Awaking”.

S: Igen, nagyon örülök neki. Eddig inkább a közreműködéseimről voltam ismert, és úgy éreztem, itt az ideje, hogy előálljak valami sajáttal. Sok nagyon jó producerrel dolgoztam együtt, mint Apex, Bilal Salaam, Muhsinah, Flying Lotus és Nick Speed. Az első single a „Floating” volt, ami nagyon jól szerepelt, nagyon sok pozitív visszajelzés érkezett. Nagyon élveztem a lemez elkészítését, igazán jó élmény volt, és nagyon örülök, hogy végre itt van valami, ami igazán az enyém, és nagyon elégedett vagyok a lemezzel.

J: A Flying Lotus számról szeretnélek kérdezni, nagyon szeretem a zenéjét, a csóka tavaly robbant be a köztudatba. Nagyon érdekes zenét készít, nehéz is definiálni, mondjuk glitch, elektornikus hip-hop, elektro-hop, de mindenképpen instrumentális. Tudom, hogy készített néhány remixet, illetve egy-egy számot itt és ott, de meglepődtem, amikor láttam az albumod produceri listáján.

S: Nos, Flying Lotus és én régóta ismerjük egymást. Én is nagyon érzem a zenéjét, úgyhogy nem volt számunkra kérdés, hogy készítsük valamit együtt.

J: Ezen túl feltünt, hogy bár a zenéd és a szövegeid eddig is személyesek, lélekkel teliek és öntudatosak voltak, és természetesen találunk erre számtalan példát az albumon, mint az „Addicted”, a „Who Knows” és a „Heaven”, amely egy egyedül álló anya nehézségeiről szól, mintha új irányt vettél volna, gondolok itt különösen pont a Flying Lotus számra, a „Cosmic Dust”-ra.

S: (nevet) Ja, ja, vágod, törj olyan magasra amennyire, csak tudsz, mindenki a csillagok felé vágyik, nem? Azért nem feltétlenül nevezném új iránynak, egyszerűen ez van bennem mostanában. Így éreztem, úgyhogy ez jött.

J: Végül egy kérdés, amit nehéz lenne kihagyni, mivel éppen az elnökválasztás után vagyunk. Mi a véleményed, hogy Obama lesz az Egyesült Államok következő elnöke?

S: Természetes nagyon örülök és biztos vagyok benne, hogy ez egy történelmi pillanat. Mégiscsak az első fekete elnök. Ami zseniális! A változás meghatározó fogalma volt az egész kampánynak és nagyon remélem, hogy ez a változás be is következik. De ugyanakkor, különösen, hogy ez a változás ott áll a középpontban, az embereknek meg érteniük, hogy Obama megválasztása önmagában nem hozza el ezt a változást. Nem szabad, hogy most elragadtassák magukat. Meg kell érteniük, hogy ahhoz, hogy érdemi változás jöjjön, nekik is tudni kell váltani. Minden változás az egyénekkel kezdődik, úgyhogy első lépésként mindenkinek magában kell körülnéznie, önmagát kell tükör elé állítania. Szóval ahhoz, hogy ez a nagy változás meg is történjen, az embereknek először magukat kell megváltoztatni. Belül kell kezdődnie.

J: Bölcs szavak...

S: Oh, köszönöm.

every now and then i come accross somebody who just blows away my mind. djinji brown is one of those people. a criminally slept on artist, son of jazz great marion brown, producer engineer, overall musician who grew up in the bronx. just to name a few who he's worked with: pete rock and c.l. smooth, a tribe called quest, the seven head label, etc, etc.

just google the guy!

anyway in this day and age of myspace, yutubery and bloggery, whoever has a proper website, well, you just know they are serious. or maybe its just us music nerds? dunno...

the point is since the guy has black and spanish blood runnin through his veins, havin a really open mind towards music - and here i mean every genre - who makes heavily latin and afro influenced just plain beatiful soul music, you just know it was worth getting out of bed for one more day...

i just love it when you listen to somebody's creation and you feel they put all their heart and soul into it.
ok enough of the cheesy positivity spillage.

even though his work is rather obscure, meaning no torrent and rapidshare 15 seconds around here, check his site as he has quite a few tracks up for streaming. abeuleita's dance - a song inspired by his grandmother, who sports the front sleve of the 12" and Djinji had this to say about: "... well, if you've never seen a Latin Grandmummy dance, then you ain't seen nothing! I mean for real, it is incredible! I had the pleasure of escorting Celia Cruz on stage once and, althought she couldn't really move her knees, she was shaking her hips like she's really doing it" - is gonna be in my next mix.

Usually I don't tell to people that I'm into music. Even thought most of the time I have headphones on, if somebody asks me it's mostly, well, I listen to hiphop and I already know, that even if there is a slight scrap of idea in the others head, it's not what I think about. So mostly its, ah Yo! Yo! (and I feel the pain inside), sometimes its Yeah, Yeah (and I feel the pain inside) or worst comes to worst they ask about somebody or start to tell me something vaguely rap related something (and.... I feel the pain inside).

Anyway this is hiphop. I could go on and on about the voice of the underprivilidged, about how this is something worth culturally, as in pop culturally... this is 21st century, post colonialism, at the middle of culture colonialism, what do you do when "popular music" gets political, it's real, as in reality - as in art reflacting on reality; what makes somebody's creativity's product a work of art, but just read the bellow, watch the video, google it, if you feel you wudn't mind getting a bit more of this stuff, whatever, you know what i mean... I hope more than one of you will think its not a completely worthless idea sacrificing 120 minutes of your life on this stuff...

I'm a spit these verses cause I feel annoyed, and I'm not gonna quit till I fill the void, if I rhyme about home and got descriptive, I'd make Fifty Cent look like Limp Biskit, it's true, and don't make me rhyme about you, I'm from where the kids is addicted to glue, get ready, he got a good grip on the machete, make rappers say they do it for love like R-Kelly, it's HARD, harder than Harlem and Compton intertwined, harder than harboring Bin Laden and rewind, "to that earlier part when I was kinda like" we begin our day by the way of the gun, rocket propelled grenades blow you away if you front, we got no police ambulances or fire fighters, we start riots by burning car tires, they looting, and everybody starting shooting... damn, i haven't realized it's been two months since my last mix. everybody who knows me personally knows well, that i'm not the quickest person out of the billions of fellow human beings, but two months?

anyway the mix has arrived. my craziest so far - and if god's willing they come slowly but steadily. so this one is a look into my musical world. guess after some long years i start to drift away a bit from hiphop, even if it's not yet manifests in my vinyl buying habits.

but getting to the mix, of course there's the steady flow of emcees from all around the underground of the u.s., but there's a country song a banging drum 'n' bass remix of bonobo's nightlite, some early electronic heaven from those 4 germans who changed electronic music forever and some jazzy electro from diplo (with whose producion i've fallen in love lately).

hoppá, nem igazán tünt fel, hogy hónap telt el a legutóbbi mixem óta. aki személyesen is ismer, az tudja, hogy a több milliárdnyi ember közűl nem én vagyok a leggyorsabb, de két hónap?

na mindegy, a mix elkészült. a legzakkantabb eddig - és ha a sors is úgy akarja, akkor ugyan lassan, de folyamatosan jönnek a következők is. szóval ez egy kicsit nagyobb betekintést enged zenei világomba. úgy tűnik hosszú évek után lassan kezdek eltávolodni a hiphoptól, mégha ez egyenlőre nem is észlelhető a bakelit gyűjteményemen.

de egy kicsit a mixről. természetesen jó sok mc feltűnik az amerikai underground világából, de va egy country dal, egy nagyon ütős drum'n'bass remixe a bonobo nightlit-jának, egy kis korai electronika attól a 4 némettől, akik örökre megváltoztatták az elektronikus zenét és egy kis jazzes electro valami diplotól (akinek az alapjait imádom mostanában).

...::: to be honest i heard, read, dreamed the sentence "yeah, the next wu album is coming", that i really did't believe it until i saw this. so this clears a bit the entusiasm part, right here...
anyways check this out, a pretty good interview with every living member minus Masta Killah and Ghostface couple of the members. nothing special, except for a couple of funny spots. basically Meth looks high as a kite, but still shows why he is the most charismatic out of them all. they talk about europe, which is always a sweet topic for a pair of eastern european ears, they dwell on the loss ODB, drama in the family, and somebody please tell me, do GZA and U-God look ridiculously bored listening to RZA philosophizing about the meaning of the 8 diagrams or is it just me?
at least after this one i start to believe that there will be something titled 8 diagrams!

...::: hogy őszinte legyek annyiszor hallottam, olvastam, álmodtam a mondatot "ja, ja jön a következő wu album", hogy ameddig ezt nem láttam, nem igazán hittem benne. ez talán megmagyarázza egy kicsit a lelkesedés részt...
na mindegy, a lényeg, hogy ezt csekkold, egy elég jó interjú minden élő taggal, minusz Masta Killah és Ghostface. Semmi különös, leszámítva néhány mókás momentumot.
Meth, mint a kiscsirke úgy be van tépve és mégis megmutatja, miért ő a legkarizmatikusabb tag. beszélnek európáról, ami a kelet európai fülnek mindig kedves téma, elmerengenek ODB halálának hatásán, a "családi" ellentéteken, és valaki mondja meg, tényleg annyira unottnak néz ki GZA és U-God, amikor RZA az új album címének jelentéséről filozofálgat, vagy csak velem van a baj?
de legalább ezután kezdek hinni benne, hogy lesz egy 8 diagrams című album!

until a year ago i had this radio show called Jurij Ganjov's Happy Hours on Rádió Mi in Szeged. Emanon interview - English version

...:: a couple of weeks ago, emanon, dj houseshoes and illa j visit budapest and had a gig. i had the chance of talking to dj exile and aloe blacc of emanon fame.

JG: Could you tell a little bit about your background? How did you grow up, how did you meet each other?

Exile: I grew up in Orange County, California, I was doing hiphop on my own and I met up with Aloe in ’94, and I always wanted his boy on a mixtape of mine and he was always like, "nah, you should hook up with this MC" and it was Aloe. One day we met at Denise, I kicked a beatbox, he started rhyming and we been doing music ever since.
JG: Could you tell how and when you started Emanon and what the name stands for?

Exile: Emanon, first it was originally just a visual thing, you know, just a strange name but it had a visual meaning to it. Emanon stands for No Name if you read it backwards. It just kind of represents us, just being us. One of the meanings as far as in my eyes, or one of the meanings I like to use is, no name, its just really not about us, it’s just all about the music.

JG: The other day I was listening to your EP, Anon & On, and there is this song, What Can I Do. It sounds really personal, but at the same time, I think Aloe, you had a pretty strong message there, which does not necessarily stick to the regular. I mean it sounds like a song which cries for change, but I wouldn’t put it in the usual category of - if I can use that as a label – protest songs. Aloe could you elaborate a bit on that song?

Aloe: The song is about the frustration that I felt with the idea about grassroots movements. At the time a lot of my friends were joining the bandwagon of a lot of movements that seemed like effortless in a lot of ways. Cause it was more of lip service, a lot of talking without actions. It seemed like, everybody just sit around and do a lot of talking about what we want to do and how we want to change things and complain about the things that were as they were. And nobody was doing actually anything. So I just said fuck it, I personally would rather just do songs and live my life and do what I want to do, the way that I can and not talk about the changes I want to see. Instead if there ever going to be a change it’s just going to be me doing it. Not joining a group just so I can have a false hallucination of being in a group, because it’s not real. A lot of people seem like, they just want to get together, so they can have a fellowship and a community [where] they can get together to talk about change, but nobody is doing anything, so it just hurts. And it hurts to change things, you know what I mean? You can get fucked up, you can get hit by cops, thrown into jail or whatever. A lot of people are not serious about change. The song is like, you know, what can I do as one person in a group of many who just talk and talk and talk. What can I do to make anything change? So all I can do is change myself, so that’s all I’m going to worry about, myself. And if everybody worries about changing themselves than things could possibly get better.

JG: I wanto ask you about The Waiting Room, your debut album. What I really like about is that it feels like a whole. What I mean is, it seems that in hiphop these days the art of the full album has disappeared. Most albums are like a string of songs instead of one long player.

Exile: You know what’s funny is that a lot of the songs that were on the EP, Anon & On were supposed to be on the album. Then the EP ended up [being] just a bunch of songs which represented our skills and our mind at the time, it was a long time in the making and then we just put it out.

Aloe: We put it together as not just one song after the next, we wanted to make sure [that] there are interludes and transitions. Because when you listen to it, we wanted you to feel like you don’t want to stop; almost in a way that you can’t stop, because it’s like, when one song ends it just flows into the next one and it’s just that way, and by the end of the album it feels like it came too soon and you just want to start over. You know it’s just when you put together an album you should put together an entire piece of work, just like a song. You know when you put together a song, you don’t start putting together a song and then stop for the chorus and then start again for the verse and then stop, chorus. And an album is the same way, it’s an entire story, it’s a story in one piece. It’s not a sitcom, not "to be continued" tomorrow, it’s one project, it’s the art piece.

JG: So the album is one cohesive piece of work, however, you have this skit at the end of the song ’The world don’t sing no more’, where you put together a speech by George W. Bush, from snippets of his actual speeches, where among other things he says every country should beware and that the Bush administraiton will give four nuclear missiles to every children in America. It is pretty hilarious, but sounds quite real and scary at the same time.

Exile: As far as what Bush has been doing to the world, his lies to get things his way, we felt like we expose what he really is, and who better to say how he really is, than the President himself.

JG: Your solo album, Shine Through came out on Stonethrow Records, how did you hook up with them?

Aloe: I hooked up with them through Oh No. He’s been my main connection. We met while on tour throughout Europe in 2002 and when we came off the tour we kept working together, made some songs, and I eventually recorded an album with Oh No. Stonethrow heard the album and they liked the singing I was doing a lot on there. They asked me to do a single, on the soul tip, vocal tip. So I did the single and then eventually it evolved into an album.

JG: Was singing always in you? Did you make vocal songs before MCing or did that come later?

Aloe: You know I was always singing little songs. And I always did a few singy songs, even on the
early Emanon stuff. On Anon & On, there is Runaway, and on The Waiting Room, I did a lot of singing: Farewell, She Thinks, The World Don’t Sing No More, and I had some other songs I was singing on which we never released, but then for Shine Through, my solo, I really wanted to do the whole singing thing.

JG: I heard you are working on the follow-up to The Waiting Room.

Aloe: Yes even though we are just conceptualizing what’s it going to be. I have some things I want to do, Exile has some things, but we’ll start 100 % fresh.

JG: As I see your early songs and the EP were more straight hiphop, while the LP is more diverse, touching different genres. Will the new album go towards that direction?

Aloe: I think it’s going to be more like The Waiting Room, but at the same time it’s going to have a very direct and specific hiphop presence. While it’s going to have a good deed of hiphop presence, at the same time it’s going to be more aware of other genres.

JG: You been touring in Europe for a while now and a lot of American artists say that the European hiphop crowd is quite different than in the States. What’s your take on that?

Exile: In America we have our niche states, where we do well, we definitely have cities where they appreciate us the same, but I mean, we get sandwiches over here! (laughing)

Aloe: I don’t think it’s only hiphop, it’s the appreciation of life, it’s different [in Europe]. A lot of the countries we go through here, people are more politically active from an early age...

Exile: The radio and television is more prominent upon U.S. citizens, more than out here, and it really controls their taste and their artistic taste, whereas here you guys are more open, cause you allow a lot of crazy shit.

Aloe: I think people in the States are more influenced and controlled by the media and sedate because of it, they are very calm and not so active about life, more spectators than participators. But in Europe you find more participators than spectators.

JG: When I was in the States what I felt is that people are not really critical, they just take whatever is in front of them, they take everything by face value. They don’t really question things...

Aloe: That is true. But why it got that way, I don’t know. I guess people feel comfortable enough, feel life’s simple enough, so they don’t need to make changes. But there hasn’t been a big change since the 50s, 60s. Since the Civil Rights Movement. The problem now, well, I think there should be a big movement against the media, and against the socialization caused by media. There needs to be an entire movement, but it’s much more difficult, because now we are not dealing with governmental issues, but corporate issues, we are led by corporations.

Exile: Corporations are bigger than fucking government, I mean money is bigger than anything. Government is ain’t shit ’cause people are just giving in to the evils of money.

JG: But don’t you think that unfortunately hiphop is the same way now as opposed to its beginnings? What I mean is in the early days and even after that for a log time it was also critical, kind of in the outside looking in with a very critical eye. Do you think it will eventually get back to what it used to be in this sense?

Aloe: Yes, once it gets out of the hands of the industry. And I think it slowly gets back to that. Even though I don’t think its mandatory, though. I think we can find other topics. I think what is important is that within the hiphop community we are critical, our music doesn’t necessarily have to be. And have whatever critical dialog we have outside of the recordings, if possible. It doesn’t neccesarily have to be what hiphop is. It’s still the CNN or the news reporting of what’s going on in our community, but I think we can move pass that, we can get into other ideas and other topics.

JG: Let’s get back to your music, you said you’re conceptualizing the new album, do you have any idea when it’s going to come out?

Aloe: I’d like to have it out by September, but it depends on a lot of things. We might release Exile’s album first or Emanon first.

Exile: Yeah, I’m working on an album which will be all samples, the title's gonna be Radio. I’ll sample everything from the radio and tv, the drums, the base, the dude yelling in the back, everything! So go and check for that!

Emanon interjú - magyar változat

....:: néhány hete emanon, dj houseshoes és illa j budapesten járt egy fellépés erejéig. úgy hozta a sors, hogy sikerült egy rövid beszélgetés erejéig a közelébe férkőznöm dj exile-nak és aloe blacc-nek, az emanon két tagjának.

JG: Azt hiszem a magyar közönség nem ismer igazán titeket, mesélnétek egy kicsit gyerekkorotokról és arról, hogyan ismertétek meg egymást?

Exile: Orange megyében, Californiában nőttem fel. Egyedül műveltem a hiphopot, amíg nem talakoztam Aloéval ’94-ben. Volt egy haverja, akit mindenképpen szerepeltetni akartam az egyik mixtapemen, de ő állandóan egy másik MC-ről mesélt, akivel össze kéne állnom. Aztán egyik nap talalkoztunk a Denise-ben, én elkezdtem beatboxolni, ő meg rímelni rá, és azóta is együtt zenélünk.

JG: Mikor kezdtetek az Emanon név alatt zenélni, és egyáltalán mit jelent a név?

Exile: Az Emanon eleinte csak egy vizuális dolog volt, csak egy furcsa név, de vizuális jelentéstartalommal. Emanon egyébként No Name ha visszafelé olvasod. Igazából minket képvisel, ezek vagyunk mi. Az egyik jelentése, vagy legalábbis az egyik jelentése amit előszeretettel használok: no name, az egész nem rólunk szól, hanem a zenéről, a zene az, ami számít.

JG: A minap az Anon & On EP-teket hallgattam, és a What More Can I Say című dal különösen megfogott. Nagyon személyes hangvételű, ugyanakkor komoly, de valahol különös üzenete van. Úgy értem a dal szinte követeli a változást, de ezzel együtt nem helyezném a szokásos – ha használhatom gyüjtőfogalomként – protestáló dalok sorába. Aloe mesélnél kicsit erről a számról?

Aloe: A dal arról a frusztrációról szól, melyet a polgári mozgalmak miatt éreztem. Abban az időben amikor ezt a dalt írtam, nagyon sok barátom csatlakozott különböző mozgalmakhoz, melyek igazából kifejezetten passzívnak tűntek. Mert inább csak dumának tűnt az egész, rengeteg szócsépelés bármiféle cselekvés nélkül. Úgy tűnt mindenki csak összeül, a végtelenségig arról vitáznak, mit akarnak tenni, hogyan akarják megváltoztatni a dolgokat, és csak a dolgok állásáról nyavalyognak. De valójában senki nem csinált semmit. Úgyhogy azt gondoltam, a szarba az egésszel, én személy szerint inkább dalokat írok, élem az életemet, teszem a dolgomat ahogy tudom, ahelyett, hogy koptatnám a számat, hogy ezen meg azon a dolgon kéne vátoztatni. Ehelyett, ha lesz valaha valami változás, akkor én leszek az, aki ezt véghezviszi. Nem fogok csatlakozni egyetlen csoporthoz sem, csak azért, hogy lehessen egy hamis képem, melyben egy csoport tagja vagyok, mert ez az egész nem valós. Érzésem szerint nagyon sok ember csak azért csatlakozik ezekhez a csoportokhoz, hogy összegyűlhessenek és úgy érezhessék, van egy szövetség, egy közösség, ahol a változásról beszélgethetnek, de valójában csak ártanak ezzel az egésszel, mert senki nem csinál semmit.
De a változás fájdalmas folyamat. Te magad is elcsesződhetsz közben, rendőrök megverhetnek, börtönbe kerülhetsz vagy bármi. Nagyon sokan valójában nem veszik komolyan a változást. A dal arról szól, hogy vajon én magam mit tudok tenni, még ha egy olyan csapat tagja is vagyok, akik csak üldogélnek és dumálnak a változásról. Mit tudok én magam tenni, hogy bármi is megváltozzon? Annyit, hogy én magam változom. Így hát én csak magam miatt fogok aggódni. És ha mindenki így tenne, ha mindenki csak magán változtatna, meg lenne rá az esély, hogy a dolgok jobbra forduljanak.

JG: Lenne néhány kérdésem a The Waiting Room-ról, a debüt albumotokról. Azt szeretem benne igazán, hogy egy egésznek érzi az ember. Véleményem szerint manapság a hiphop-ban eltünőben van az egész album, mint koncepció. A legtöbb album nem több, mint egy CD-re összedobált dalok gyűjteménye.

Exile: Tudod, igazán vicces, de több dal is , amely az Anon & On EP-n volt eredetileg az albumon is szerepelt volna. Aztán végül az EP-ből egy kis gyűjtemény lett, ami minket, akkori képzettségünket és gondolatainkat képviselte. A dalok nagyon sokáig készültek és végül csak megjelentettük, bármiféle koncepció nélkül.

Aloe: De az albumot nem úgy raktuk össze, hogy csupán egyik szám a másik után, biztosak akartunk lenni benne, hogy vannak interlude-ok meg átvezetések. Mert azt akartuk, hogy amikor meghallgatod, úgy érezd, hogy nem akarod abbahagyni, már-már nem tudod abbahagyni, mert amikor az egyik számnak vége van, akkor egyszerűen beleúszik a következőbe, és mire az album végére érsz, olyan mintha túl korán lenne vége, és előlről akarod kezdeni. Vágod, amikor egy albumot összeraksz, egy teljes összefüggő munkát kéne összeraknod, úgy, mint amikor egyetlen számot készítesz. Mert amikor egy számot készítesz, nem úgy csinálod, hogy elkezded, aztán megállsz, hogy hopp itt a refrén, aztán kezded elölről, verszak, aztán megállsz, refrén. És egy album ugyanilyen, egy teljes történet, egyetlen történet egy darabban. Nem egy tv sorozat, „folyt. köv.” holnap; egy munkáról van szó, egy egybefüggő műalkotásról.

JG: Szóval az album egy nagy összefüggő zenemű, mégis szeretném kiemelni a The World Don’t Sing No More végén található skiccet, melyet George W. Bush beszédeiből vágtatok össze, gyakorlatilag egy új beszédet készítve, melyben többek között minden országot megfenyeget, hogy jobb lesz, ha sosem packáznak a Bush kormánnyal, és hogy 4 nukleáris robbanófejjel fogja megajándekozni Amerika összes gyermekét. Extra vicces lett szerintem a dolog, de ugyanakkor ilyesztően valósan hangzik...

Exile: Ha azt nézzük, hogy Bush mit művelt a világgal, a hazudozását, csak hogy elérje, amit el akar érni, úgy gondoltuk, megmutatjuk, ki is ő valójában. És ki lenne erre alkalmasabb, mint maga az elnök?

JG: Aloe, Shine Through című szóló lemezed a Stones Throw Records gondozásában jelent meg. Honnan a kapcsolat?

Aloe: Oh No-n keresztül ismertem meg őket, ő a fő kapcsolódási pont. 2002-ben ismertem meg, amikor együtt turnéztunk Európa szerte. A turné után tovább dolgoztunk, készítettünk pár közös felvételt, és végül egy teljes album lett belőle. A Stones Throw hallotta azt az albumot, tetszett nekik, hogy énekelek. Felkértek egy hasonló stílusú maxira. Megcsináltam a maxit, melyet végül egy teljes album követett.

JG: Mindig is énekeltél? Készítettél vokális számokat már az MC-zést megelőzően is, vagy csak később kezdted?

Aloe: Tudod, mindig is énekeltem. És mindig is készítettünk dalosabb számokat, már a korai Emanon cuccokon is. Az Anon & On EP-n ott van például a Runaway, a The Waiting Room-on pedig kifejezetten sokat énekelek: Farewell, She Thinks, a már említett The World Don’t Sing No More. De ezeken felül is volt sok dal, melyeken énekeltem, csak éppen nem jelentek meg. Azonban a szólómon, a Shine Through-n direkt az éneklés volt a cél.

JG: Ha jól tudom, elkezdtetek a következő albumon dolgozni.

Aloe: Igen, bár még csak a koncepción dolgozunk. Nekem is, Exile-nak is vannak ötletei, de a lényeg, hogy teljesen a nulláról indulunk.

JG: Az új album tovább halad az EP és az LP által elindított csapáson? Értem ezalatt, hogy a korai dalaitokat és az EP-t inkább a szokásos hiphop hangzás jellemezte, míg az album kifejezetten sokszínűre sikerült, különböző zenei stílusok és hatások fedezhetők fel.

Aloe: Valószínűleg inkább a Waiting Roomra fog hasonlítani, de ugyanakkor érezhető lesz majd rajta egy nagyon konkrét és direkt hiphop hatás. És míg ez a hatás nagyon erős lesz, ugyanakkor tudatosabb is lesz más zenei stílusok irányában.

JG: Már egy ideje itt turnéztok Európában. Egyik visszatérő téma beszélgetéseim során, hogy mennyire különböző az itteni közönség. Ti mit gondoltok erről?

Aloe: Szerintem nem csak a hiphop más, egyálalán az életfelfogás. Nagyon sok országban, ahol jártunk az emberek egész fital koruktól sokkal aktívabbak politikailag...

Exile: A televízió és a rádió sokkal prominensebb az Amerikaik életében, sokkal inkább meghatározza ízlésüket és a művészetek iránti fogékonyságukat, míg itt az emberek sokkal nyitottabbak, sokkal több őrültséget engednek itt.

Aloe: Szerintem az embereket sokkal jobban befolyásolja és kontrolálja a média, sőt mi több lehiggasztó hatással van rájuk. Nagyon nyugodtak és nem igazán aktívak , inkább csak nézők, mint résztvevők, míg itt Európában inkább résztvesznek az életben és nem csak passzív nézők.

JG: Amikor az USA-ban jártam, én úgy éreztem hogy az emberek nem igazán kritikusak, elfogadják, amit az orruk elé tesznek. Nem igazán kérdőjeleznek meg semmit sem.

Aloe: Így van. De hogy ez mitől van, erre nehéz válaszolni. Gondolom az embereknek kényelmes így. Úgy érzik, az élet így, egyszerűen szép és nem kell változtatni semmin se. De nem is csoda. Ha megnézed, nem volt semmilyen nagy változás az 50-es 60-as évek óta, a polgárjogi mozgalom óta. Mi a probléma manapság? Szerintem kéne egy nagy mozgalom a média szocializációs hatása ellen. Kellene egy mozgalom, mely teljes mellszélességgel vállalja, hogy megváltoztatja a világot, de ez ma már sokkal nehezebb, mert itt már nem a kormányról van szó, hanem nagy vállalatokról, a nagytőke vezet minket, a nagytőke diktál mindent.

Exile: A nagytőke hatalmasabb, mint a kibaszott kormány, úgy értem a pénz hatalmasabb mindennél. A kormány semmit sem ér, mert az emberek simán fejet hajtanak a pénz gonosz akarata előtt.

JG: De nem érzitek úgy, hogy sajnos a gyökereivel szemben a hiphop is ilyené vált? Arra gondolok, hogy a korai időkben és még utána is elég sokáig kifejezetten kritikus volt, amolyan kívülállóként és nagyon is kritikus szemmel figyelte az eseményeket. Szerintetek képes lesz a hiphop újra ilyenné válni?

Aloe: Igen, de csak akkor, ha kikerül a zeneipar kezeiből. És szerintem lassan efelé tartunk. Bár nem gondolom, hogy ez ‘kötelező’, szerintem van még rengeteg más téma. Az a fontos, hogy a hiphop közösség maga legyen kritikus, ettől még a zenénknek nem feltétlenül kell annak lennie. És ha lehetséges bármilyen kritikus párbeszéd, az a zenén kívül legyen jelen. Nem feltétlenül szükséges, hogy a hiphop maga legyen ez a kritika. És bár nagyon sokszor még mindig a fekete CNN, vagy híradó mely beszámol arról, hogy mi történik a közösségeinkben, ezen tovább lehet és tovább is kell lépni, felhasználhatunk más témákat és ötleteket is.

JG: Egy rövid kérdés erejéig térjünk még vissza a ti zenétekhez. Említettétek, hogy fejben már dolgoztok az új albumon, van-e már terv, hogy mikor jelenik meg?

Aloe: Én szeretném szeptemberben a boltok polcain látni, de ez még nagyon sok mindenen múlik. Még az sincs eldöntve, hogy az Emanon vagy Exile albuma jelenik-e meg először.

Exile: Igen, dolgozom egy albumon, Radio lesz a címe, ami csak a rádióból és tv-ből vett hangmintákból készül. A dobok, a basszus, a háttérben kajabáló csávó, minden!
